Eating Mushrooms Reduces Prostate Cancer Risk

First time Japanese have given the search that there is a link that intake of mushrooms reduces the rate of prostate cancer. Although the size of the effect is not extravagant.

But the findings have given affirmative results about further investigations. The National Cancer Institute has predicted that by 2019 there will be around 174,650 new cases of prostate cancer in the United States. A lot of work has been going on and the results are quite promising but no proper investigations have been made for the complete cure and prevention from prostate cancer.

However, researchers say that eating healthy might reduce risk. To exactly find what diet would minimize the risk for cancer they started doing research and are optimistic about the effect of mushrooms in the diet it may reduce the risk for prostate cancer. Researchers have recently carried out a study on mushrooms publishing their findings in the International Journal of Cancer.

Why Mushrooms:

mushrooms are inexpensive and widely consumed throughout the world. Recent studies have shown that mushrooms have remarkable disease-fighting qualities. 2012 research has shown that mushrooms have anti-cancer, anti-diabetic and anti-inflammatory properties. Studies on different cultured cells and animal models have shown that they can slow tumor growth. Almost never- 6.9% of participants , one or two times a month- 36.8% , once or twice a week- 36.0%, 3 or 4 times a week- 15.7% almost everyday, 4.6% when the follow up was done there were 1204 cases of prostate cancer which equates to 3.3% of all the participants.

On further analysis what researchers thought to come up with was that the effect of prostate cancer was no significant in men more than 50 years of age. Further to which author believes this could be because of prostate cancer is rare in young men. They also adjusted their analysis for the amount of energy consumed that is in terms of fruit vegetables and meat. In other words, the reduction was not for instance that the participants ate more mushrooms but they also consumed other vegetables.

What is worth noticing is that those people who ate fewer mushrooms had 0.31% more chances of developing prostate cancer from those who ate mushrooms, which account for 3.42% compared with 3.11% respectively.

Data collection:

For more promising research, the researchers had data from 36499 Japanese men between the age of 40 and 79 years who they followed for a median of 13.2 years. This data is from the Miyagi Cohort Study and the Ohsaki Cohort Study. Scientists collected data about diet, medical history, smoking status physical activities education drinking habits, etc. Then they assigned each participant to one of five groups of mushroom consumption.

They then assigned each participant to one of five groups based on their mushroom consumption:

  • rarely: 6.9% of participants
  • one or two times each month: 36.8%
  • one or two times each week: 36.0%
  • three or four times each week: 15.7%
  • almost every day: 4.6%

The team found out that, according to authors the earlier study tested white powdered mushrooms. However, the recent study has shown but the recent study the first makes a conclusion about mushroom intake and reduction in prostate cancer in the population.

Recent Study about Mushrooms:

Researchers have declared that mushrooms are beneficial for health for elderly men. People of middle-age can also use mushrooms since it reduces the risk of prostate cancer. (Journal Reference

There were 1,204 cases of prostate cancer during the follow-up period. This came to 3.3 percent of participants. The study also revealed those that ate mushrooms three or more times each week had a 17 percent lower relative risk of prostate cancer.
